I made you another mixtape. This one is completely crazy and full of the synthy and/or chippy jams I love to blast in lieu of sleep. Enjoy, and try not to keep the neighbors up too late.
Goto80 - Volksing (Kuti 77 remix) by KUTIKULA
la la la la ya da-da-da, ba ba ba ba ba-da ba-da ba-da
Penny And Ashtray - This Way Up
From the release Automation on Candymind. Streamed from the Internet Archive.
I find this track slightly hypnotic. Which is a good thing when you’re looking to dance. Nothing else in the world matters, it’s just the driving beat, the squelchy bass, and the very lo-fi voice samples. And everything about this track is just so playful. The bassline meandering up and down, the random arps in the background, the C64-esque percussion. It’s impossible to be serious while listening to this song. Which is good for me, because I can’t be serious anyway.
And in the “seemed like a good idea at 4 AM” category, we have this jam. Featuring more chipmusic, because I remembered that a lot of commercial chip stuff has gone free (i.e., Infiltrator) or is otherwise free to stream.
This jam is a bit more cohesive, but there’s still the “double speed” thing going on between a few songs, most noticeably between Manipulate (Freezepop) and High Fidelity (Daft Punk). Though that is kinda funny.
In any case, this is the best jam ever because of the transition between High Fidelity and Atomicity and Consistency. Probably because the three dudes involved are all French.
Also, I did not tell the computer to order the tracks for the surprise twist ending.
My favorite member of The X-Dump remixed by the only member of The X-Dump to have participated in a Famicompo. (That I know of.)
Temp Sound Solutions - Floating Point (Alex Mauer Cover)
From the release Magnetic Sumo on II. Original version from the release Vegavox 2 on II.
Temp Sound Solutions are no stranger to covering Alex Mauer. And this is awesome. Squealing guitars all over the place!
Multifaros - Captain Kirk
From the release The Lost Beats on mp3death. Streaming from the Internet Archive.
A very demostyle-type song that probably wouldn’t feel out of place on a C64 instead of a Gameboy. It’s got chirping arps all over the place, buzzing basslines, and fun beats that make you want to dance.
Based on the title, I have to assume that this is inspired by every warp sequence from Star Trek. Y’know, go into warp, have a lightspeed party, get out of warp, pick up more people to party with, go back in, repeat as necessary. I suddenly have the urge to get the Star Trek MMORPG just so I can do that. Or maybe just run around in the snow outside to simulate the warp drive effect.
If you listened to starPause’s Blip Fest happy hour set, you know this track.
