DL Brothers (PNFA Remix) by Kay Grove
This release has a very special meaning to me. About two years ago when someone pointed out to me that the Internet Archive had sections other than the Wayback Machine, I found my way onto the Netlabels section of it. I semi-randomly clicked on a link (one of the “Staff Picks” links on the side of the page) and found this release. If you’re curious, it’s still there. Apparently they haven’t bothered updating that very specific part of the website in about three years, it’s still there. (Coincidentally, one of the other first releases was Offline Remixed which used to be the spotlight item.)
In any case, the release turned out to be full of deep & funky house tracks. This one in particular is probably my favorite, second only to the original mix of Brothers. The beat is this perfect blend between chill and driving, punchy but laid back. The bassline is great too, chugging along with a syncopated rhythm. And the synths and pads on top of everything else are nice too.
If you’re wondering what the differences between the original mix and this mix are, the original is a lot smoother (more legato than staccato) and has a different beat (different percussion). They’re both great tracks suitable for a wide variety of purposes. Chill enough to not dance to (if you insist, lazy bum), driving enough to not not dance to. I’m sure you know what the best choice is.
You really should check out the rest of Brothers EP. Kay Grove also has another release, Samba 440 / Nightwalk, which has Latin house and deep, slightly minimal house. This remix was done by chill guy PNFA. He has plenty of free goodies on his website, but be careful, his audio player autostarts whenever you change pages. (So 1990s.) The netlabel rest is unfortunately closed but their music lives on. They’re full of anti-cool techno, house, and trance tracks ranging from awesome to practical jokes, for all your obscure four / four dance music needs.
