DL From Stars to Future by Phonex
Remember back in March when I mentioned that Language Lab had a bunch of converted modules in their Internet Archive collection? I dug through them last summer during a trip down to El Paso to catch up with some family, and maybe hang out in the desert a little bit too. Since an addiction to the internet runs in my family, my netbook always had a wireless router to sync up with. I took the opportunity to binge on Language Lab when not spending time with my family. This track was one of many that I liked.
It’s by Phonex, who at the time of its release was a member of the tracker group Rebound. As you can see from the file_id.diz conversion above, it’s described as “atmospheric space ‘n bass.” (Side note: the track didn’t come with any cover art and the file_id.diz seemed most appropriate, plus scene.org already made it for me.) What this means is that it’s atmospheric drum & bass with a distinctive “spacey” feel to it. Things like reverb, synth twerps, metallic-sounding drums.
“Atmospheric” might not be the best term to use here, since we’re probably well past the 62 miles of Earth’s atmosphere and in space now. Those chugging breakbeats really push you a lot further than you expect, what with the pads and melodic synth lines distracting you and all. It’s hard to understand how fast you’re going when you have nothing for perspective.
If you like this, you’ll probably love the uncompressed goodness that is the source .xm file. It’s only about 1 MB in size. You should also consider doing a search for Phonex on the Internet Archive. Or just crawl through the collection for Rebound.
Ever been to the White Sands National Monument? It’s the only place in the desert that I know of you’re able to go sledding.
