xwd is here at college

I'm a student at RIT. I like computers. I enjoy weird music. I'm a nice guy. This is my blog for stuff I liked, did, made, or thought.
I'm part of I Love Copyleft, where I talk about music I found on the internet on Fridays (usually).
Feel free to ask me questions.

About

On the internet I go by xwd. It’s almost my first three initials, except x is a cooler letter than c so I use that instead. Any resemblance to Linux utilities, maintained or depreciated, is purely coincidental.

I’ve been on the internet pretty much non-stop more or less since January 2001. My first internet communication was asking how to turn on the automap in Diablo 2. (It’s Tab.)

I’ve had an obsession with netlabels and chipmusic since April 2008 when a friend told me that the Internet Archive is good for more than just the Wayback Machine. I’m updating I Love Copyleft on at least Fridays. Surprisingly, my MP3 player holds 512 MB and is a piece of junk, but at least it lets me listen to Mutiny of the Robots wherever I want. Some people who make music I like include Psilodump, Freezepop, Symbion Project, Goto80, Comfort Fit, Multifaros, DJ Zinc, PNFA, minusbaby, Nullsleep, little-scale, and transient. If you want quantifiable data, check out my Last.fm profile. We can be scrobblebuddies if you want.

I like playing games. I particularly like the free / shareware online ones since I don’t have any money, though the commercial kind are usually better. I know how to play arcade games. (Protip: don’t continue. Ever.) I also play RPGs, because I need an excuse to act like a maniac, or for a complete change of pace, not a maniac. I prefer the less rules-intensive ones, because I play around with differential equations enough in my math classes and because the excessive presence of numbers distracts me from acting like a crazy person. (I’ve just gotta solve this random math problem and roll this polyhedra! We can talk about the morality of what I’m doing after my calculator finishes making this graph.) I don’t mind a good old fashioned meatgrinder level of lethality; as long as characters take less than a minute to make you kill them as often as you want. Since you’re cool enough to want to know more about me, I’ll let you in on a little secret: I’m trying to get an RPG-related blog up and running with some of my friends I play Labyrinth Lord with over the internet. One of them is a sysadmin or something so it shouldn’t be too hard. Keep it on the down-low, I don’t want to build expectations for something that might not emerge anytime soon.

As a computer geek, I like talking about computers and their software in excruciating detail. My desktop (assembled by myself) runs Windows XP and multi-boots various other operating systems. My netbook (EeePC 4G Surf, the tiny one) runs Debian Linux. I like foobar2000, Firefox, Chrome, and Litestep. (explorer.exe is for newbies.)

You can bug me on AIM at xwdishere.
